How You Can Bend It Like Beckham
Anyone who is a soccer fan has like heard the expression ‘bend it like Beckham.’ This is essentially a unique way to kick a soccer ball, which imparts a massive amount of side spin. The defenders, and goalie, will be expecting the ball to have a straight, rising trajectory, only to find that the ball curves several feet at the last second. This is an excellent way to score a lot of goals, if the player can master the technique.
How does he do it? Well, the technique is actually pretty simple to explain, but it will take a ton of practice to master. This helps explain it more. The first thing that he has to do is strike it with the middle of his foot. Many players have a tendency to kick with their toe, which does not allow them to have maximum accuracy or the ability to work the ball. Assuming the player has the ‘soccer style’ kicking technique mastered, the concept is easy. The ball operates off of friction, which is the same concept of curving a ping pong ball. The player must find a way to add more friction to the ball. Beckham simply snaps his ankle into the ball, while aiming left of a right target, or vise versa.
