Real Madrid Vs. FC Barcelona: El Clasico

El Clasico is arguably the biggest soccer rivalry in the world. Real Madrid V. FC Barcelona: the fight for supremacy in La Liga. Combined they have won 52 league titles, and have been runner’s up another 43 times. Twice a year they meet in league play, with the games always meaning something, if only bragging rights for the two teams. It’s the two biggest cities in Spain going at it, as well as the two most passionate fan bases. It doesn’t matter how good of a season you are having: if you don’t beat your rival you cannot claim dominance on them.

The rivalry has been fairly evenly matched. In 162 La Liga meetings Real Madrid has won 68 times, while FC Barcelona has won 63 times. 31 of the matches ended in ties. In fact Real Madrid has only scored seven more goals than Barcelona has in the series, 259-252. With that said, FC Barcelona has dominated recent play, winning five straight matches from December 2008 through November 2010. The most recent El Clasico match, which occurred on April 16, 2011, saw the teams tie 1-1. FC Barcelona got the last laugh, though, winning their third straight La Liga title.
